Reduce salaries for Members of Parliament – Muhammad Segirinya

The newly elected Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Mohammad Segirinya, has spoken out against the state-sponsored posh lives that legislators live advocating for a salary cut for the members of parliament.

The vocal and comical Segirinya said that intends to table a motion before parliament seeking to reduce the salaries of all legislators to not more than five (5) million shillings.

Members of Parliament get a basic salary of 11 million Shillings which comes to 6 million Shillings after all deductibles, but get an average of 10-30 million shillings in monthly mileage allowances which Segirinya believes is too much.

Segirinya also promised to distribute the 100 Million Shillings allocated to the members of parliament to purchase vehicles to women with small and medium businesses as well as members of families of National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters that lost their lives during “the struggle”.

The comical self-proclaimed Mr. Updates also proposed that the powers of the president be trimmed and allow for the parliament to approve of the president’s directives before they are implemented.

Segirinya beat the incumbent Hajji Latif Ssebaggala Ssengendo as well as renowned opposition politician Sulaiman Kidandala. FDC’s Muhamood Mutazindwa, NRM’s Kasenge Tom Fisher, Serunkuma Yusuf and ANT’s Rogers Sendawula were also in the race for the Kawempe North MP seat that Segirinya won with a total of over 41,000 votes.

The 33-year-old says he has already ordered for two ambulances for the constituency, in celebration of his landslide victory.
