Internet and Social media services fully restored – Minister Ogwang

The Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance in Uganda’s Cabinet, Peter Ogwang has revealed that Internet and Social Media services have fully been restored in Uganda.

The Minister revealed that the internet and social media shut down was for purposes of security of the country and conveyed apologies for any inconveniences caused by the shut down.

Peter Ogwang urged Ugandans to be constructive and not destructive consumers and/or users of social media.

The internet and social media services were shut down on January 13th, 2021 ahead of the general elections that were held on January 14th, 2021.

Internet services were switched back on about a week later even though social media services were still restricted and users could only access them by Virtual Private Network (VPN) bypass.

All social media platforms have been made available for access to all Ugandans except Facebook which the Government says will first liaise with the company that runs the platform before it is made accessible to Ugandans again.
