The Minister for Finance, Planning and Economic Development in the Ugandan cabinet has denied knowledge of plans to tax cash withdrawals from commercial banks.
He made the remarks in response to an earlier letter written to the Governor of the Bank of Uganda, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Patrick Ocailip, asking the Governor of the Bank of Uganda to share his views on the proposed tax.
The letter made rounds on social media and was published by different media houses ad news outlets with many calling out the government on the unjustness of the proposed tax.
Minister Kasaija has however responded and revealed that he is not aware of any proposal by government to implement the said tax and he was hearing it for the very first time.
“Tax on withdrawal of money? I am hearing this for the first time. Yesterday, we were talking about tax measures and I have not seen that among the tax measures. I am hearing it for the first-time,”
Matia Kasaija, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development
