The Uganda Women Parliamentary Association has asked the President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Robert Kyagulanyi to emulate the leadership of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and appoint a woman as the Leader of Opposition in the 11th Parliament.
The FDC has been the leading opposition party in parliament since the multi-party system was launched in Uganda and has thus been the party appointing the Leader of Opposition in Parliament since 2006.
In 2006, when the FDC took on the responsibility of holding the position, Prof Ogenga Latigo was appointed as LOP. He was succeeded by Nathan Nandala Mafabi, who was replaced by Philip Wafula Oguttu before the ladies took on the mantle.
The FDC appointed Kasese Constituency Member of Parliament Winnie Kiiza as LOP in 2015 before replacing her with Betty Aol Ochan from Gulu Constituency who holds the position to date.
Robert Kyagulanyi, whose National Unity Platfrom (NUP) party holds the most seats, second to the ruling NRM party, in parliament and will therefore choose the next LOP.
The Women in Parliament have asked Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine to emulate their predecessor FDC and choose a female LOP just like the FDC has been doing in the recent past.
