The Court-Martial is a legal court – Brig-Gen Felix Kulayigye

The Political Commissar of the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF), Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye has defended the Government’s decision to arraign civilians in a military court saying it is a legal court.

This comes after a number of people have condemned the Government and security forces for arraigning civilians in the army-led court-martial instead being tried civilian courts.

Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye said that the Court Martial is a legal court in the country and operates under the Judicial Service Commission and is therefore eligible to try anybody brought before it.

He went on to advise the National Unity Platform (NUP) to focus on defending their colleagues that are incarcerated irrespective of which court they are tried in.

“Nkunyingi referred to their colleagues being tried in the Court Martial. The Court-Martial is a legal court. My only advice to NUP is for them to continue defending their colleagues.”
