Uganda has this afternoon received the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines ahead of the phased vaccination exercise that is scheduled to begin on MArch 10th, 2021.
A shipment containing 864,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine arrived at the Entebbe International Airport today and were received by the Minister for Health, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng among other dignitaries.
As earlier planned, this first batch of the COVID-19 vaccine will benefit frontline workers including health workers, teachers, persons above the age of 50 as well as people with underlying health conditions.
According to Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, Uganda plans to vaccinate about 49.6% (21,936,011) of the population in a phased manner with each phase covering about 20% (4.38 million people) of the target population.
The COVAX Facility, the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, allocated 3,552,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Uganda from January to June 2021. This implies that the remaining 2,688,000 doses are expected by June 2021.
