As the entire country and world at large celebrated the International Women’s Day, there are some people whose thoughts about the celebrations of the day here in Uganda makes little or no sense to at all.
The Chairperson of the Women’s League in one of Uganda’s main opposition parties, the Forum for Democratic Change, Ingrid Kamateneti Turinawe has said that she cannot call this day a Women’s Day a celebration.
Ingrid Turinawe, outlined a number of reasons why she cannot refer to this day as a celebration, highlighting the fact that she cannot celebrate when she doesn’t see what is there to celebrate.
“I don’t call Women’s day a celebration. I can’t celebrate when I don’t see what is there to celebrate.”

Ingrid Turinawe, whoalso serves as the National Political Mobilizer for the FDC also added that bodies and organizations that fronted women issues and strenghts liek the Women’s Movement led by admirable women like Winnie Byanyima have all vanished.
Women who commanded respect and were admired like former Vice President Specioza Kazibwe also disappeared and now there’s only female speaker of parliament for us to celebrate, Ingrid added.
“Where is the women’s movement that the women we admire like Winnie Byanyima used to drive? We used to celebrate Vice President Specioza Kazibwe until she disappeared. Now we are celebrating a female Speaker of Parliament.”

According to the radical and vocal human rights defender, there is so much that women have to do, including but not limited to organizing themselves and getting back to the core issues that affect them.
She also says that there are plenty of women in positions of power but without power which doesn’t benefit the women that they lead, including the over 100 female MPs that haven’t really done much for the women that voted for them.
“There is so much we have to do as women, organize ourselves and go back to the core issues that affect us. We have women in positions of power but without power. This doesn’t benefit the women population out there. We have 100 female MPs but what have they done to help this woman who voted them into power?”
