The Chairperson of the COVID-19 Vaccine Advisory Team in Uganda, Prof. David Sserwadda has advised Ugandans to ensure that they still maintain and respect the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) even after they have received the vaccine.

He made the remarks while appearing on NBS Television this morning prior to the launch of the COVID-19 Vaccination program that kicked off this morning at the Mulago National Refferal Hospital, Kampala.

“If you are getting vaccinated, you still have to carry out all the standard operating procedures that are in place.”

Prof Sserwadda added that the version of the vaccine that the medical team responsible for the COVID-19 vaccination program is comfortable that the vaccine which has been received by the nation is a fairly safe vaccine.

He highlighted the fact that taking the vaccine is purely voluntary and it would never be by force even though they surely advise the general public to accept and have it.

“We are reasonably comfortable that this is a fairly safe vaccine. Taking this vaccine is voluntary. I don’t think it would be advisable to force. There is always hesitancy when any vaccine is introduced. It would be prudent that all health workers take this vaccine very seriously.”

According to Prof Sserwadda, the vaccine may have side effects, just like any other drugs and/or vaccines but the benefits will surely outweigh the inconvenience.

“All drugs have side effects, but you know that the benefits outweigh the inconvenience.”
