The incumbent Speaker of Parliament Hon Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, has turned down calls for the position of Vice President of Uganda as she stood her ground over the fact that the position of Speaker of Parliament is what she wants and none other.
Hon Kadaga was meeting members of parliament from Busoga region yesterday in her continued pursuit for votes for the position of Speaker of Parliament, a position she has held for the past ten (10) years.
While speaking to the media after meeting the Busoga region members of Parliament, Kadaga who was using English, Luganda and Lusoga said that she would not even think about taking the VP role as that would put her below somebody, the President.
She made it ardently clear that as Speaker, she is the head of the Legislative arm of the Government and she wants it to stay that way.
The Busoga Region members of Parliament, pledged their allegiance to her and promised to support her all the way through and vote her back into the office of Speaker of Parliament for a third consecutive term.
The race for Speaker of the 11th Parliament has so far attracted interest from four candidates including the incumbent, Hon Rebecca Kadaga, the current deputy Speaker, Hon Jacob Oulanya, Opposition Chief Whip and FDC part Spokesperson, Hon Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda as well as Democratic Party’s Richard Sebamala.
