The court Martial in Makindye has today granted bail to the last batch of NUP members who were arrested on a campaign trail of former presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.
The group that numbered over 100 has been released in different phases and the last group of 18 members had their bail approved today after they were supposed to appear in court last week. The court was however adjourned over unlcear reasons.
This group that consisted of the most popular figures who are close to NUP president Kyagulanyi spent close to seven months behind bars. The released group today included Nubian Li, Eddie Mutwe and Dan Magic.
Thse had been incarcerated on claims of gun possession which they have denied as pure outright lies.
People power supporters took to different social media platforms to welcome these back to the free world although they acknowledged this was partial freedom.
“Welcome back Family. Happy to have you back. A big thank you to our lawyers and everyone who worked tirelessly to ensure that you regain your freedom.” One Twitter user commented.
“Temporary freedom for @eddie_mutwe@NubianBukenAli@SirDanMagic1 and 16 others. Welcome back ba ssebo, I can only imagine what you have been through. You shouldn’t have ended up there in the first place. They should never organise elections if they don’t want to be challenged.” Kfm journalist Patrick Kanyomozi wrote.
