Haitian President assassinated

Haitian President Jovenel Moise was today 7th July 2021 assassinated by yet to be identified assassins at around 8am East African time.

The president was killed in his private home as communicated by the interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph.

He went ahead to say that the President’s wife Martine Moise but was receiving medical treatment.

“A group of unidentified individuals, some of them speaking Spanish, attacked the private residence of the president of the republic and thus fatally wounded the head of state.” The prime Minister said.

The prime Minister also added that the police and army had the situation under control.

However gunfire could be heard in the outskirts of the capital, Port-au-Prince which is home to about 1 million people.

The assassination comes at a time when gang violence is very high in the Caribbean country.

Different gangs have been involved in fatal clashes with the police over control of the streets in the recent past.

The small country in the meantime is battling high rates of poverty and high crime rates.

Haiti is currently politically polarized and faces a growing humanitarian crisis and shortages of food, fears of widespread chaos.

The Dominican Republic said it was closing the border it shares with Haiti on the island of Hispaniola.
