Forget about Sheebah, Juliana and Iryn- Naira Ali names Uganda’s most influential female artists

Talk about Ugandan female urban music and the first names on everyone’s lips will be Juliana Kanyomozi and Iryn Namubiru. This is not the case however for Ugandan US based singer Naira Ali.

The Sikyalinda singer thinks there are three main female artists who paved the way for women to succeed and dominate the charts in Uganda and these are Cindy, Grace Nakimera and Jackie Chandiru.

According to Naira Ali for a woman to make it years back, she had to either sing slow music or be affiliated to a male crew. This is because it was difficult in an era of the likes of Dr Jose Chameleone, Bobi Wine, Bebe Cool, Radio and Weasel, GNL Zamba, Rabadaba, Navio, Aziz Azion among others especially when they were at their peak.

However the emergence of Cindy, Nakimera and Chandiru paved the way for women and they are now rocking airwaves. Cindy was able to conquer dancehall, Nakimera took over the Afrobeats whereas Chandiru conquered the RnB scene.

According to Naira Ali, the trio emerged at a time when beef was its peak amongst male artists which made rhe competition unhealthy. There was also witchcraft as per the singer.

She further said that Nakimera told her of how at one time she was boxed in the stomach by a top male artiste then who claimed that she was stealing the show from them.

It’s therefore for the trio’s sweat that the current female artists are enjoying maximum success thus she paid tribute to them.
