The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has encouraged young people to remain hopeful regardless of the setbacks they encounter in life, reminding them that challenges are a natural part of the journey to success.

Speaking on the realities many young people face, the prime minister acknowledged that some have experienced failed marriages, unsuccessful businesses, and other disappointments that can easily lead to despair.
“What you should never do is lose hope and give up,” he said, emphasizing that difficult experiences often build resilience. Quoting a familiar saying, he added that whatever does not kill a person makes them stronger, just as a child does not stop learning to walk after falling once.
To illustrate his point, the Katikkiro shared his own experiences before rising to prominence. He revealed that he once ventured into the thrift merchandise business in Kikuubo, where he occasionally suffered significant financial losses.
“Some days I’d make huge losses,” he recalled.
Owek. Mayiga also noted that even in his legal career, there have been periods when work was slow despite the responsibility of paying employees and supporting people who depended on him.
He cautioned young people against turning to alcohol and drugs as a way of coping with life’s hardships, saying such habits only provide temporary escape without solving the underlying problems.
“Some people lose hope and turn to drowning themselves in alcohol and drugs,” he said. “This shouldn’t be the way because when you become sober, the problems are still here for you to solve.”
He urged the youth to face challenges with courage, remain patient, and keep working towards their goals, stressing that perseverance is key to overcoming life’s inevitable obstacles.
