President Yoweri Museveni has granted an official burial to veteran playwright, actor and cultural icon Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu, who passed away on August 15, 2026, aged 72.

The announcement was made by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda, who said the National Organising Committee (NOC) had begun working with Mukulu’s family to organise a befitting send-off. His burial is scheduled for August 20, 2026, at Kijabijjo in Gayaza.
“Dear friends, I wish to inform you that the President of the Republic of Uganda, H.E. Gen. @KagutaMuseveni, has granted an official burial to the fallen statesman, Mr. Alex Edward Kabangala Mukulu,” Babalanda said.
She conveyed condolences to Mukulu’s family, friends, colleagues in the performing arts industry and Ugandans, describing his passing as a loss to the country’s cultural and entertainment sector.
Mukulu was one of Uganda’s most influential figures in theatre, with a career spanning several decades as a playwright, actor, director and mentor. Through his work, he helped popularise local theatre and storytelling while using drama to address social issues and promote Ugandan culture.
His contribution to the performing arts earned him recognition as a cultural icon, with generations of artists benefiting from his experience and mentorship. His official burial is expected to bring together family members, cultural leaders, artists and members of the public to honour his legacy.
