Media personality Doreen Nasasira has stood by her decision not to date financially unstable men despite facing heavy criticism over her remarks.
Nasasira said her comments were based on her personal experiences and were not intended as advice from a motivational or feminist perspective.
She explained that she was speaking to people who could relate to the kind of financial situation she had previously experienced in relationships.
“What I said wasn’t from the perspective of a motivational speaker or a feminist. It was my personal opinion. Don’t insult me. If you have never dated a person in similar financially unstable circumstances to what I did, don’t give me any attention.”
Nasasira maintained that she would not settle for a partner who is completely financially unstable or has nothing to offer, although she said she has no problem with someone who has little but is willing to share what they have.
“I will never settle with someone who is financially unstable, broke, and penniless. I wouldn’t mind someone who has little but is willing to share it.”
She also pushed back against those who interpreted her comments as general advice, stressing that she was only expressing her personal preference.
According to Nasasira, the backlash will not change her position, regardless of the insults directed at her.
“That was the context in which I relayed my message, but I have been attacked. It wasn’t advice for your kids; this was my own opinion. Even if you insult me for the whole day, it will not change the fact that you are broke. Everyone has their level.”
Nasasira further responded to people who labelled her a prostitute because of her views, saying she was not bothered by the insult.
