Former Forum for Democratic Change president and four time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye weighed in on the prevailing campaign violence and continued arrests of opposition figures.

The retired army officer blamed all the lawlessness and criminality of the security forces on the Uganda Electoral Commission boss, Justice Simon Byabakama.

Besigye said that the EC boss is worryingly silent about issues that matter most in the electoral process and his closed eyes on the matters only proves that he is not in charge of the entire process.

He added that blaming the atrocious acts of the security forces on COVID-19 is totally wrong because the global pandemic started almost a year ago and the Electoral Commission had plenty of time to prepare for the elections.

He also added that, even before the novel Coronal Virus put the whole world down to it’s knees, nobody was allowed to make consultations prior to nominations which were the first stages of the elctoral process.

“Let nobody say it is just #COVID19. COVID started in March. Even before, nobody could consult. That is the failure of the Electoral Commission.”

Dr. Kizza Besigye said that Justice Byabakama should show the nation that he is in charge by not just cautioning them, but summoning them and stopping them from continuing on with all the wrong they are doing.

“Byabakama should not just be questioning the security, he should be summoning them because he is the one in charge of elections.”
