Former President of the Forum for the Democratic Change and four time Presidential Candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye has said that the arrest of prominent lawyer and Human Rights defender Nicholas Opio is not surprising.
In a post on his Facebook page, Dr. Besigye expressed disgust in the manner in which the lawyer was arrested even though he claimed it was not surprising as the lawyer’s home had been broken into earlier on.
Mr. Nicholas Opio and his colleagues were arrested yesterday from Lamaro Restaurant and reports indicate that they were in the final stages of an investigation into the killings of the people between 18th and 19th November 2020.
A great number of people have since condemned the manner in which the lawyer and his learned friends were arrest.
Dr. Besigye said that it is not surprising that the Police is acting in that manner since the country is drawing closer to the 2021 general elections.
The Uganda Police say that they arrested Nicholas Opio and detained him at the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Kireka on charges of “money laundering and related malicious acts”.
According to Dr. Besigye, this is likely to be part of the plans that National Resistance Movement chairperson and flag bearer in the forth coming elections Mr Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni has to rig elections.
“This is, likely, a part of the terror associated with Mr M7 rigging the 2021 election to keep power after 35 yrs of misrule- SHAME!”Dr. Besigye
He added that Non-Government Organizations have always been targeted from office break-ins and their bank accounts frozen; and this always escalates towards election periods.
Dr. Besigye also called upon all right thinking Ugandans and people of good will worldwide to condemn the actions of Uganda’s rogue regime.
“All right thinking Ugandans and people of good will worldwide should condemn the actions of Uganda’s rogue regime. The greatest majority of Ugandans are struggling to reassert their will and control over Uganda; to end a Rule of the Gun and establish a Rule of Law and a democratic dispensation”Dr. Besigye
