Today marked 35years since National Resistance Movement(NRM) came into power in 1986. The NRM Liberation day is always celebrated on 26th January of every year.

His Excellency the president of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa graced the ceremony as the guest of honor with first lady mama Janet Museveni by his side. Many dignitaries from the National Resistance Movement party were also in attendance including the Prime Minister of Uganda Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, Vice President Hon Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi among others.

The theme of this year’s celebration was “Securing the Future for all Ugandans.”

His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta the president of Uganda through his speech congratulated the National Resistance Movement (NRM) on the 35th celebration of the victory they attained in 1986 which he acknowledges that is came after a longtime of struggle that started in 1965.”

The president assured Ugandans that he doesn’t support sectarianism and calls it ‘ rubbish’. He pointed out that sectarianism is the reason why other political parties didn’t become successful for a long time like Democratic Party (DP) which was for Catholics, Uganda People’s Congress(UPC) which was for Protestants and Kabaka Yekka was for Buganda residents.

HE. Museveni cautioned that sectarianism only deters prosperity as he questioned why people would look at people’s identity yet they have similar intentions.

He also revealed that NRM’s victory didn’t just surface but they worked hard for it. According to the NRM chairperson, they prepared for over 20 years and went for several trainings with the help of HE Julius Nyerere who was the president of Tanzania then.

“I went with a group of 28 boys and we spent 2years of training 1976-78 and came back to fight on the front line on December 23rd, 1978.”

HE Museveni also emphasized that he is focusing on the doctrine of rejecting politics of identity and focusing on politics of the general public highlighting the fact that “Victory of National Resistance Movement was not victory of army but victory of ideas”.

“National Resistance Movement insists on Pan- Africanism and also to intensify the East African Market. I have been telling Ugandans during campaigns to stop working for the stomach only”
