Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the brutal mob killing of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, bringing the total number of people in custody to 10 as investigations continue.

Gongodyo, 27, a forward for Uganda’s national 15s rugby team, the Rugby Cranes, and a key player at Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club, was allegedly attacked and beaten to death on Friday, June 5, 2026, in Bukoto.
In an evening update on Tuesday, June 9, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the latest arrests, identifying the suspects as Mugwiisa Obed and Owino Joseph, a local security guard.
Police say Mugwiisa was captured on CCTV footage wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a large log during the fatal mob attack.
“During interrogation, he led investigators to a local laundry (dobbi) where he had taken the yellow T-shirt he was seen wearing on the day of the attack. The garment was subsequently recovered,” Kawala said.
The two suspects join eight others already in custody, including Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, Namukose Juliet, Elly Mondoni, Herbert Twinomujuni, Katsigazi Perigrino, Darlious Tayebwa, and Hannington Tugume.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Gongodyo, who was also a student at Makerere University, was attacked by a mob after being falsely accused of snatching a woman’s handbag.
Although police intervened and rushed him to Mulago National Referral Hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to severe injuries.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and identify all individuals involved.
