Vinka Opens Up on the Reality of Life Under a Record Label

Success in the music industry doesn’t come simply because an artist signs to a record label, according to Ugandan singer Vinka, who believes musicians must take responsibility for building their own careers instead of relying entirely on their management.

The Swangz Avenue star made the remarks during a YouTube podcast as she weighed in on the recent departure of Zafaran from the label. Drawing from her own experience, Vinka said record labels invest heavily in artists without any certainty of getting a return, making it the artist’s duty to maximize that opportunity.

She explained that while a label can provide resources such as funding, songwriters, stylists, costumes, and production, none of those guarantees fame or longevity. In her view, an artist’s identity, work ethic, and ability to connect with fans are what ultimately determine whether they succeed.

Vinka also challenged the widespread belief that record labels hand artists instant success. She said the reality is far more demanding, as signed musicians must work tirelessly to justify the investment made in them.

She added that artists cannot afford to become complacent because labels are constantly scouting and signing fresh talent.

According to Vinka, anyone hoping to join a record label should understand that the journey requires dedication, persistence, and a strong personal brand rather than expecting everything to be handed to them.
