New details have emerged about the final moments of veteran musician Moses Matovu, with eyewitnesses claiming that the Afrigo Band icon was attacked during a confrontation involving a woman in Kibuli, Kampala.
According to one local resident who witnessed the incident, the suspected attacker first confronted and allegedly assaulted a woman before turning his attention to Matovu.
The witness claimed that the man then punched Matovu, causing the 77-year-old musician to fall and hit his head on the ground.
Residents identified the woman involved as Rose Tumusiime, although police have not publicly confirmed her identity or established that a dispute over her was the motive for the attack.
Boda Rider Recalls Finding Matovu
Menya Chris Frank, a boda boda rider who took Matovu to Kibuli Hospital, also provided an account of the aftermath.
Chris Frank said he found Matovu shortly after he had been struck and immediately placed him on his motorcycle before rushing him to the hospital for treatment.
Matovu later succumbed to his injuries at Kibuli Hospital.
Some residents have alleged that the confrontation was connected to a dispute involving the woman who was reportedly with Matovu at the time. There have also been unverified claims circulating about the woman’s background.
However, those claims have not been independently established and have not been confirmed by police.
Police Investigate Suspected Murder
Police said Matovu was attacked on the morning of September 24, 2026, at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
Kabalagala Police have opened a suspected murder case, with detectives working to establish what happened and identify the person responsible.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala earlier said preliminary investigations indicated that Matovu had gone to the residence of a woman he was reportedly in a relationship with at about 5:30am.
Police said Matovu and the woman were allegedly confronted by a man who was also believed to have previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
According to police, the confrontation became physical, leaving Matovu with serious injuries. The male suspect reportedly fled the scene, while the woman who was with Matovu was taken into police custody to assist with investigations.
Police have stressed that the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Matovu’s death have not yet been fully established.

Matovu, aged 77, was one of the founding members of Afrigo Band, which was formed in 1975.
Over several decades, he became one of the most recognisable figures in Uganda’s live-band music scene, contributing to Afrigo Band’s enduring presence in the country’s entertainment industry.
His death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s music fraternity, while investigations continue into the circumstances that led to his fatal injuries.
