Ugandan lawyer and politician Mubarak Munyagwa has criticised the changing standards of dressing in Uganda’s entertainment industry, singling out singer Gloria Bugie over what he described as her skimpy outfits.
Speaking during a conversation with Kasuku, Munyagwa argued that some artists are gaining attention more for revealing their bodies than for their musical abilities.
He cited Gloria Bugie as an example, claiming that her public image and dressing have become a bigger talking point than her music.
According to Munyagwa, the entertainment industry has experienced a decline in what he considers acceptable standards of morality, with some performers increasingly appearing in revealing outfits.
“The type of artists being supported lately dress very skimpily. The likes of Gloria Bugie. You love them because they show you parts of themselves that should be kept private. I don’t like that,” Munyagwa said.
He went further to say that if he had served as either Minister of Internal Affairs or Minister of Gender, he would have arrested Bugie and had her imprisoned in Luzira as a way of teaching her a lesson.
“I’ll repeat this: if I were the Minister of Internal Affairs or Minister of Gender, Gloria Bugie would be in Luzira. I would have arrested her,” he said.
Munyagwa’s remarks come amid ongoing public debates over stage fashion, artistic freedom and changing social standards within Uganda’s entertainment industry.
