Cindy Sanyu Says She No Longer Needs a Hit Song to Stay Relevant

Cindy Sanyu believes she has reached a stage in her music career where chasing hit songs is no longer her biggest priority.

Speaking in a recent interview, Cindy explained that while many people believe an artist must release a chart-topping song every year to remain relevant in Uganda’s music industry, she no longer subscribes to that mindset. Instead, she says her focus is on making quality music that keeps her presence alive.

I don’t need a hit song but I need to float, I can’t sink. I need good music, the music that doesn’t necessarily need that much promotion, a sound that can catch people,” she said.

According to the singer, her current goal is to create memorable music rather than songs designed purely for commercial success. She noted that she has built a loyal fanbase over the years and feels responsible for giving them music they can continue to enjoy.

I have this fanbase that has been there since my establishment so I need to give them something as we keep walking together,” Cindy explained.

The former Blu*3 member also dismissed claims that her music only appeals to a local audience. She argued that breaking onto the global stage is not simply about talent, but also depends on the level of support artists receive from their governments and industry stakeholders.

Cindy pointed to Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz as an example of an artist who benefited from institutional support. She believes Ugandan musicians need similar backing to compete internationally.

Our government doesn’t care at the moment and I’m happy now they are beginning to care. We need a budget to get airplay for Ugandan artists,” she said.

Cindy has consistently advocated for stronger investment in Uganda’s creative industry, maintaining that with the right support, local artists can successfully expand beyond the country’s borders.
