Ugandan music continues to evolve with a new generation of artists proving that a successful career can be built beyond the traditional structures of radio, television and major record labels.
Among the emerging artistes carving out an independent path is Crim Soft, a Kampala based singer songwriter whose music blends Afrobeat, Afro Zouk and Soul.
Crim Soft began his musical journey as a child before officially venturing into professional music in 2020. Since then, he has worked with notable Ugandan producers, including Dexta Gabla and Herbert Skillz while steadily developing a sound built around contemporary Afrobeat, Afro Zouk rhythms and soulful melodies.
Choosing the independent route
Unlike many artistes who depend heavily on radio and television airplay to introduce their music to audiences, Crim Soft has taken a different approach.
The independent musician has largely stayed away from major record labels and traditional broadcast structures, instead investing in his own projects and using digital streaming platforms to connect directly with listeners.
His strategy reflects the changing face of Uganda’s music industry, where artistes can now release and promote their music directly to audiences without relying entirely on traditional gatekeepers.
For Crim Soft, the independent route has also given him greater control over his music, creative direction and career while allowing him to build a more direct relationship with his audience.
Building an audience through streaming
The strategy appears to be gaining traction, with Crim Soft’s Spotify profile currently showing more than 215,000 monthly listeners.
His growing digital audience has been supported by a catalogue featuring both solo releases and collaborations.
Among his notable songs is “Sweeting My Mind,” one of his standout solo releases. He has also appeared alongside Alien Skin and Joshua Baraka on “Tusabimba (Remix).”
Another notable collaboration is “My Soul,” which brought together the production talents of Herbert Skillz and Dexta Gabla.
In 2026, Crim Soft added “Siren” to his catalogue, a single produced by Nessim Pan Production. He has also teamed up with DJ Ricky on the smooth collaboration “Okay.”
Beyond individual singles, the artiste has continued expanding his body of work through projects including Sweetin and Attention II.
A new model for Ugandan artistes
Crim Soft’s journey highlights a broader shift taking place within Uganda’s music industry.
With streaming services and social media giving artistes direct access to audiences around the world, musicians no longer have to rely solely on radio, television or record labels to build recognition.
For independent artistes, this model can provide greater creative freedom while allowing them to invest directly in their careers and build communities around their music.
Crim Soft has embraced that model by putting resources into his own projects and allowing his music to find its audience through digital platforms, word of mouth and direct fan engagement.
His growing listenership is a sign that there is an audience for artistes willing to take the independent route and build patiently outside the traditional industry structures.
As Uganda’s music scene continues to change, Crim Soft’s story represents a new generation of musicians using technology, independence and consistency to create their own space in the industry.
