Janzi: How to Play and Learn the 22-String Traditional & Modern Instrument

The Janzi is a modern Ugandan musical instrument featuring two parallel sets of 11 strings mounted on wooden necks connected to a wooden soundbox. The strings are fitted with guitar-style tuning machines, while built-in pickups allow the instrument to be connected to sound systems for amplification.

One of its distinctive features is its dual tuning arrangement. The left side uses a seven-note diatonic scale, while the right side uses a five-note pentatonic scale. This design allows musicians to combine chords, melodies and improvisation.

How to Play the Janzi

The Janzi can be played while seated or standing, held upright or at a comfortable angle. Players use both hands, with each hand working on a different set of strings.

The left hand commonly provides chords and harmony, using the thumb, index and middle fingers. The right hand often handles melody and improvisation, with beginners starting with the thumb and index finger.

The Janzi using modern strings and tuners

Like a harp, the strings are plucked using the fingers. Beginners are encouraged to practise each side separately before combining both hands to develop coordination, rhythm and expression.

How Beginners Can Learn

Ssewa Ssewa’s tutorials provide a starting point for anyone interested in learning the instrument. Beginners can first familiarise themselves with the string arrangement and basic plucking techniques before moving on to simple chords.

Lessons also cover chords one to six in the key of A, demonstrating finger positions and how to move between chords while maintaining the same finger patterns.

Once comfortable with the basics, learners can practise holding chords with one hand while improvising with the other. A Janzi instructional book is also available in physical or soft-copy form, offering guidance on finger movements.

For practical demonstrations, beginners can look for the official JANZI or Ssewa Ssewa YouTube channels and search for Janzi tutorials covering the instrument’s structure, tuning and beginner lessons.

With its combination of traditional African scales and modern musical possibilities, the Janzi offers musicians a distinctive way to explore and create music.
